Whether your child was just diagnosed or you’re comparing providers, here are honest answers to what parents ask us most.
Questions
Every family starts with questions
You're not supposed to have this all figured out. Most parents come to us with a long list of questions, and we're glad to answer every one. Here are the ones we hear most.
Just starting out
My child was just diagnosed with autism. Now what?
First, take a breath. A diagnosis can bring a lot of feelings at once, and you don't have to figure out the next steps on your own. Our team can explain what ABA therapy is, answer your questions, and help you decide if it's right for your child. The easiest first step is a free consultation call.
What is ABA therapy?
ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy helps children with autism learn new skills by understanding how each child learns and what motivates them. Therapists break big skills like communicating needs, playing with friends, or getting dressed into small, doable steps, and celebrate every one along the way.
Is my child a good fit for ABA therapy?
ABA is most often recommended for children with an autism diagnosis. Every child is different, so our intake assessment helps us understand your child's needs and whether ABA is the right fit.
Isn't ABA rigid or old-fashioned?
ABA has changed a lot over the last 20 years. Today's ABA is individualized, play-based, and focused on your child's comfort and willingness to take part. At MBS, we build on what your child enjoys and teach what to do, rather than focusing on what not to do.
How is ABA different from occupational or speech therapy?
Occupational therapy focuses on motor and sensory skills, and speech therapy focuses on language and communication. ABA looks at how your child learns across everyday life and builds skills step by step. Many children benefit from more than one, and we're happy to work alongside your child's other providers.
What therapy looks like
What ages do you work with?
We focus on children 10 and younger. Early intervention is when new skills can make the biggest lasting difference for children and their families.
Should my child get in-home or center-based therapy?
It depends on your child and your family, and we'll help you decide. In-home therapy can be part-time or full-time and happens where your child is most comfortable. Playing with other kids takes a little planning from parents. Center-based therapy runs Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and includes time with peers. Family Skills Training can happen at our center or at home.
Does someone need to be home during in-home therapy?
Yes. An adult 18 or older needs to be home during in-home sessions. If that adult isn't a parent or guardian, we'll need a signed release of information from the guardian. When it fits your child's goals, sessions can also happen at daycare or out in the community.
Who will be working with my child?
Your child's team is led by a Qualified Supervising Professional, a licensed mental health professional and/or licensed behavior analyst. A Director and Senior Therapists provide added supervision, and Behavior Therapists work with your child day to day. Training for every team member meets or exceeds Minnesota requirements.
How long will my child need ABA therapy?
It's different for every child. Most children receive ABA for one to four years. We track progress closely, adjust goals as your child grows, and talk with you about what comes next all along the way.
How are parents involved?
You're part of the team. Family skills training happens throughout therapy, so new skills carry over into everyday life at home. When your child is ready to finish therapy, we offer up to six months of family support to help you feel confident moving forward.
Getting started
What do we need to do to start therapy?
Your child completes an intake assessment so we can understand their needs and recommend the right services. For in-home therapy, you'll want a quiet space with room for a child-sized table and two chairs. Most of all, we'll ask you to be part of the team. Parents play a big role in helping new skills stick.
Is ABA therapy covered by insurance?
Many families use private insurance or Minnesota Medical Assistance to cover ABA therapy. We'll help you understand your coverage before you get started.
